I was in a minor fender-bender and it seems like my right fender has been pushed back. At first I didn't notice anything until my friend opened the passenger door to get in and it made a really loud "popping" noise. Once we looked at it, it seems like (as I said) the fender was pushed back and now the two metals (the fender and the door) are rubbing together or past each other every time the door opens, causing the pop. Alfa Romeo . How to Troubleshoot 2002 Chevrolet Engine ProblemsFor every symptom of engine trouble, there can be several plausible causes. So, sometimes, troubleshooting engines in 2002 Chevrolet vehicles can be difficult. Some parts of the engine, like the knock sensor, are difficult to reach, and other components must be removed just to get to them. There is a way to save time from being wasted by blind investigation. 2002 Chevrolet vehicles are equipped with an On-Board Diagnostic system. You can access it with a scanner, and it can tell you exactly where the engine has had issues. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Things You'll Need OBD-II Scanner Step by Step : 1 Consult you OBD-II scanner's handbook for the exact operational procedure. Button layout and system configurations are all slightly different by a scanner's brand. While you are refreshing your memory, slide a bookmark by the pages that list generic OBD-II codes. 2 Look up the OBD-II codes online, if your scanner's handbook does not include them. Even if it did, the handbook may not have the Chevrolet's supplemental OBD-II codes. These will have to be looked up on line, because Chevrolet's owner manuals will not have them. OBD-codes.com and engine-light-help.com are both good, free resources to that end. Print out all the codes you will need. 3 Open your driver's side door and locate the Chevy's data link connection. It will be beneath the steering wheel and dash. 4 Connect your OBD-II scanner's cable to the DLC and turn either the Chevy's electrical system or the engine on. Your scanner will require one or the other. 5 Turn the scanner on, if it did not auto-activate. Some scanners can switch themselves on when they sense an incoming data stream. 6 Enter a command to "read" or "retrieve" code. This process is also slightly different by brand of scanner. 7 Look at all the codes on scanner's read out. Make a prioritized list, starting with the trouble codes. These codes have occurred often and recently, and they will be the reason why the sevice engine light has become active on the dashboard. Follow the trouble codes with ones that are "pending." these will not have occurred with the same frequency, but they could be new problems trending toward "trouble" status in the OBD-II system. 8 Consult the scanner's handbook, as well as the online material you printed out, for code descriptions and definitions. Annotate your list with this information. 9 Turn the scanner, the engine, and/or the electrical system off. Remove the scanner's cable from the DLC outlet. Pop the hood and and look into the Engine. Start at the top of your list and begin a more narrow, focused investigation of the engine. ResourcesEngine Light Help: Chevy Check Engine Light CodesChevrolet: Chevrolet Owner Manuals
Alfa Romeo . How to Retrieve RABS Trouble Codes for a 1992 Ford F-150You can retrieve the rear anti-lock brake system (RABS) trouble codes from your 1992 Ford F-150 from home using an OBD I scan tool. This tool can be purchased from most auto parts stores or from your dealership. The On-Board Diagnostics computer receives and stores RABS error or trouble codes sent to it from the anti-lock braking system. Sensors in the braking system detect malfunctions and send diagnostic trouble codes to the computer. The computer, in turn, illuminates the ABS light on your instrument cluster. You can read the codes with an OBD I scan tool so that you can troubleshoot the problem. You can also use the tool to reset the computer and turn off the ABS light after repairs have been made. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need OBD I scan tool Ignition key OBD I scan tool booklet Step by Step : 1 Locate the OBD port on the driver's side dashboard near the steering column. Insert the scan tool into this port. 2 Put the key into the ignition and turn it to the "ACC" position, but don't start the engine. 3 Wait while the scan tool turns on automatically. Some scan tools need to be turned on manually. 4 Select the "Read Codes" or similar type of command from the menu on the scan tool. Wait for the scan tool to communicate with the OBD computer. Write down the RABS codes it displays on a piece of paper. 5 Look up the meaning of the RABS codes in the scan tool's booklet. Unplug the scan tool and have a mechanic repair the brakes based on the information received from the codes. Tips & Warnings Most auto parts stores will loan you a scan tool to use for free. *When your engine heats up, the pressure in its system rises. If this pressure exceeds the level of pressure that your radiator cap is built to withstand and you don't have a recovery system, the liquid in the system bypasses the radiator cap and escapes through an overflow pipe located near the fill hole. This pipe provides a safe way for your vehicle to "let off steam." Of course, if this kind of overflow occurs often, your car loses enough water and coolant to substantially lower the level in the cooling system. You have to keep adding water, and eventually, the level of coolant protection is inadequate. To prevent this problem, you can buy and install a coolant recovery kit yourself by following the instructions in "Using a coolant recovery system" in Chapter 14. Pressure caps are relatively inexpensive, but if you have a cap that isn't working properly, or if you have the wrong type of cap, you'll be amazed at the amount of trouble it can cause. For example, if the gasket (rubber ring) inside the cap isn't working, the pressure in the system will escape, allowing the liquid to boil at a lower temperature. A modern cooling system that's been designed to operate normally at temperatures over 212 degrees Fahrenheit, and that is filled with liquid and in perfect condition, will still continually boil over if the radiator cap isn't operating efficiently. That boiling liquid will be forced into the overflow system, and your vehicle's engine will overheat. This can cause an inconvenient highway breakdown and possible danger to your engine. If your vehicle overheats on the highway, Chapter 21 can get you cooled down safely. The section "If Your Car Is a Chronic Hothead" in Chapter 14 offers remedies for other overheating problems. Although most vehicles come equipped with a safety pressure cap, which features a little lever that releases the pressure before you remove the cap, some older vehicles have a cap that lacks this feature. If you have one of these caps, replace it with a safety pressure cap immediately. Doing so can keep you from burning yourself if you have to remove the cap while there's still some pressure in the system. For this purpose, a fan is located behind the radiator, positioned so that it can draw air through the radiator (refer to Figure 8-1). Today, most fans have a plastic shroud that funnels air through the radiator. And some sports cars have air dams that help force the air up through the radiator from below. Originally, a fan belt drove the fan as long as the engine was running. Now, fan clutches on many vehicles automatically limit the fan's movement at speeds over 25 mph. Because the air rushing past them allows these fans to simply "coast" at high speeds, the engine doesn't have to work as hard or burn as much fuel to supply the power that the fans would normally con sume. Most cars with transverse engines have electric fans, some of which Alfa Romeo . What is a metal match box car?

The Water Pump The water pump (see Figures 8-1 and 8-3) draws the liquid from the radiator through the bottom radiator hose and sends it to the engine, where it circulates through water jackets located around the combustion chambers in the cylinders and other hot spots. An accessory belt drives some water pumps, while some overhead cam engines drive the water pump with the timing belt. If the timing belt drives your water pump, the water pump will be difficult to see unless you remove the plastic timing belt cover. Here's how — and why — it does this: The thermostat is a small, metal, heat-sensitive valve (see Figure 8-4) that's usually located where the upper radiator hose meets the top of the engine. (On a few vehicles, you find the thermostat where the bottom hose joins the engine. Your owner's manual should tell you where yours is.) When it senses hot liquid, the thermostat allows the liquid to pass through. But when the thermostat senses that the liquid is cold (like when you first start your car in the morning), it shuts and doesn't allow the liquid to circulate through the radiator (refer to Figure 8-1). As a result, the liquid stays in the engine, where it gets hot as the engine warms up, and in turn, the increasing heat of the liquid helps the engine to warm up more quickly. As a result, the vehicle runs more efficiently and burns less fuel. Figure 8-4: A thermostat. The Heater Core The heater core is located inside the vehicle between the instrument panel and the firewall. It looks like a miniature radiator minus the fill neck and cap. The purpose of the heater core is to provide heat for the passenger compart ment. The same liquid that the water pump circulates throughout the engine Alfa Romeo . That's all you need to know about the parts involved in the cooling system and how they work. Of course, some vehicles have more complicated systems, or variations on the theme, such as two fans run by electric thermostats that aren't connected to the water pump at all. These go on independently and draw air in to cool the engine when necessary. But in general, if you understand the way the basic cooling system works, you should have little trouble handling the one in your vehicle. Chapter 14 provides instructions for troubleshooting, maintaining, and making simple repairs.
